New Modern Electric Bike from France The Matra MS1 Electric Bike

Man, am I beat today!  I went hiking through Daniel Boone National Forest yesterday for 4 hours and most of it was up hill.  Ginny the Electric Bike Doggy, loved every minute of it as she waded through creeks and got to run off of the leash for a bit. It was a fun, yet exhausting day.  Got home, the wife and I cooked up some salmon, and before I knew it was was in the recliner watching reruns of The Office!  Anyway, it was a beautiful day and the weather was very cool for July, here, in Kentucky.

The Beautiful Matra MS1 Electric Bicycle

The Beautiful Matra MS1 Electric Bicycle

Every time I do research for electric bikes or electric scooters, I am amazed at how quickly the technology jumps ahead in such an impressive manner. The bikes look like they are designed with the end in mind, which is, of course, developing electric bikes that actually work well for the 21st century, instead of barely getting by, like e-bikes and e-scooters did back several years ago.  If I were to point to an electric bike that I thought was really embracing this idea, I would have to point out the Matra MS1 electric bike by the French company Matra Sports.

This Matra MS 1 not only looks like it is very slickly designed, but it can also deliver on performance.  In addition to the miles that you can go peddling on this exquisite e-bike, you can get up to almost 60 miles while achieving speeds of up to 30 miles an hour.  The bike touts regenerative disc brakes which helps to increase battery life and there is an LCD screen to show you speed, distance, electric power status and other information.  However, there is a downside to this awesome electric bicycle and that is its price tag.  In the U.S. you can expect to pay somewhere around $5000 for this incredible machine.  My way of looking at price, though is that if you want the type of high quality that this type of electric bike can deliver, then you will pay the price, but it is a sure bet that it will be worth it.

Toronto Testing Electric Vehicles

toronto electric bikeOver the course of this year, Mayor David Miller has been testing electric vehicles in his city, Toronto. The name of the project is called The Toronto Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle Project and it is trying to prove that hybrid electric vehicles that are equipped with larger batteries can be charged right from the home on the grid. The good mayor and his team of researchers also want to see if the vehicle can operate in an urban environment while running on a single charge for more than 50 killometers.

The University of Toronto faculty and students will gather the data relevant to the study and estimate whether or not the vehicles have a drop in emissions or if there is an improvement in fuel-mileage.

A side benefit to this idea is to see if the cars could work as back up generators, able to provide vital electricity to homes during a city’s blackout.

Mayor Miller states, ” By boosting the all-electric range of hybrid vehicles, this technology has the potential to help us address one of the largest climate and air quality impacts in the city of Toronto.”

The researchers are using eight Toyota Priuses, one Honda Civic Hybrid and one Ford Escape Hybrid and these vehicles will be driven over the course of this year.

If the project works out, there are plans in place to add anothyer 200 vehicles.

Americans Not Ready to Make Sacrifices

I guess most Americans are too well off to care if the massive oil companies are taking advantage of them. According to a survey by Consumer Reports, only half of Americans say they want to sacrifice the size of their vehicles or the performance of the vehicle in order to get better fuel economy.

Here are the astonishing figures:

People willing to get a smaller vehicle to get better gas mileage = 52%

People willing to give up performance to get better gas mileage = 49%

People willing to take fewer amenities (power windows, steering etc.) fo better fuel economy = 45%
Now, the use of hydrogen and diesel is more expensive to use on their hybrid cars, but the mileage is far better and only 31% of the people surveyed would pay more to get one of these types of vehicles.

And a whopping 60% said that they were concerned about the environment.  Actually, that figure surprises me coinsidering the number of people I saw throwing garbage all over the place this past memorial day weekend.

I guess there is even brighter news on the horizon, gas prices are expectred to rise again over the course of the summer.  If you match that along with the fact that our government wants to raise our taxes again, the future looks real bright.

I’m being sarcastic of course

New toys read brain waves (AP)

NeuroSky worker Cynthia Lee wears one of their head sets at NeuroSky headquarters in San Jose, Calif., Tuesday, March 27, 2007. The startup company aims to add more realistic elements to video games by using brain wave-reading technology to help game developers make gaming more realistic. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)AP – A convincing twin of Darth Vader stalks the beige cubicles of a Silicon Valley office, complete with ominous black mask, cape and light saber. But this is no chintzy Halloween costume. It’s a prototype, years in the making, of a toy that incorporates brain wave-reading technology.
