The CityEL Trike, The Sci – Fi Scooter !
Ok, here is a new European Electric Scooter that just recently blew my mind. I’m talking about the CityEL Trike…er Electric Car….I give up. I don’t know exactly how you would classify this vehicle, but it is definitely cool! This is a three wheeled, single seat electric powered vehicle that was developed in Denmark. Believe it or not, this vehicle started production in 1998 and was continually made until 1995.  Weighing in at around 617-pound the CityEL’s dimensions are 107.9 inches long and 41.7 inches wide, making it perfect for European bike paths.   This vehicle has a range of somewhere between 25 and 50 miles and can achieve a speed of about 35 miles per hour. Even though this electric car or should I say electric scooter has only one seat, for a reasonable price you can outfit it with another seat behind the driver. The seat will be facing backwards but it makes for an interesting ride. Not only have the manufacturers made an interesting electric scooter, but they have tried to make it safe with a steel and aluminum safety cell to protect the occupants. As we move further in the 21st century we can only guess at what new electric scooter and electric car oddities we will see.

Actually the Mini-el, as the vehicle was known as back then, was introduced on a car show in 1985 and production started shortly after (I’m not sure about the exact year but it could be bought in 1987). Production continues through today although it is now produced in Germany under the new name CityEL (due to some name dispute with another car company).
In Denmark, at least, the CityEL is classified as a motorcycle and as such must drive on the road like a car. In Germany it is available in a special version with limited speed, too. The backwards-facing seat is for children weighing up to 38 kilos. The speed can be increased up to some 43 MPH by changing the gears in the newest version.
