Americans Not Ready to Make Sacrifices

I guess most Americans are too well off to care if the massive oil companies are taking advantage of them. According to a survey by Consumer Reports, only half of Americans say they want to sacrifice the size of their vehicles or the performance of the vehicle in order to get better fuel economy.

Here are the astonishing figures:

People willing to get a smaller vehicle to get better gas mileage = 52%

People willing to give up performance to get better gas mileage = 49%

People willing to take fewer amenities (power windows, steering etc.) fo better fuel economy = 45%
Now, the use of hydrogen and diesel is more expensive to use on their hybrid cars, but the mileage is far better and only 31% of the people surveyed would pay more to get one of these types of vehicles.

And a whopping 60% said that they were concerned about the environment.  Actually, that figure surprises me coinsidering the number of people I saw throwing garbage all over the place this past memorial day weekend.

I guess there is even brighter news on the horizon, gas prices are expectred to rise again over the course of the summer.  If you match that along with the fact that our government wants to raise our taxes again, the future looks real bright.

I’m being sarcastic of course

  • Anericans need to start conserving collectively and make sacrifices. Good blog.

  • It looks like we’re coming up for another round of high oil prices. Perhaps this time round folks will be more inclined to make the sacrifices that should be common sense by now.

Time will tell, I think the days of cheap oil are long gone. But you know what, you don’t need a huge SUV in order to to enjoy their French press mug of coffee.

Even small cars nowadays have cup holders that will fit your favorite coffee mug. Don’t forget to buy organic and fair trade though. Better for people and the environment :)

  • People will say anything in a survey if they think it’ll make the look better. Like you I see folk droping waste out their car windows without a thought for the environment!

If oil prices keep going the way they are we’ll all be walking before long. :(

Thanks so much for your contribution to my blog, you are correct gas prices are going to keep escalating and going through the roof as long as we are dependent on oil. During the 1970s the oil companies drop their prices all the way down to $.25 a gallon and I remember seeing gas station that would have signs up that said “gas wars”. This was an open and planned attack by the oil-producing nations to focus on oil and then drive the prices up. Because of America’s infrastructure compared to Europe and other places, gas prices continue to go up will greatly affect our country. But, being an historian I hope and pray that Americans will innovate again like they have in the past and create a new form of energy that we can use to power our vehicles.

  • I don’t mean to be rude but why should anyone sacrifice power windows or power steering, let alone power or size? Let the market drive our habits. If oil does go up, people will naturally gravitate towards smaller cars. But give up power steering? Holy cow!

  • The prices of gas will only go down for a few days and it rises more often. There are some remedy on how to save on gas or never use gas. Electric vehicles are one.
